Levy Solomons and his wife, Anna Hyams Solomons, petition to receive "their distributable share and portion of the Estate" of Anna's late father, Mordecai Hyams, who died intestate in 1817. The Solomonses inform the court that Hyams died "seized and possessed" of a town lot in the City of Charleston, a small dry goods store, and five slaves. His widow and administratrix, Catherine M. Hyams, sold the store and purchased a slave named Sophia with the proceeds; Sophia has since had four children. According to the "Terms of the Act of Assembly of the State providing for the distribution of the Property of Persons who die Intestate," the widow is entitled to one-third of the estate, and the three children are entitled to an equal distributive share of the remaining two-thirds. The petitioners ask the court to partition the estate among the entitled parties.
