- Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. May 9, 1845. - June 8, 1850.
- Court: District
- Salutation: To the Honorable the Judge of the District Court holding Sessions in and for the Parish of Catahoula Seventh Judicial District of the State of Louisiana
Abstract
Victor Madison Despallier petitions to recover possession of seven slaves and their increase held by Jules Batis. Despallier represents that he purchased the slaves for $1,500 from J. W. Dodd on November 11, 1843. Dodd had purchased the slaves on June 7, 1842 at a sheriff's sale to settle the suit of Emeline Bynum against Jules Batis. Despallier charges that Batis continues to "unlawfully" keep and detain the slaves. He therefore prays for an order of the court recognizing his title to the slaves and directing Batis to return them to his possession. Furthermore he seeks $500 in damages to cover Batis’s “tortuous acts” as well the profits of the slaves’ services, valued at $25 per month.
Result: Partially granted.
