Abstract

Called a Bill of Sale, but more about compensation for past and future services. Moses Johnson, Senior, gives to his “beloved grand daughter Mary Ann Johnson…one Negro girl named Grace about ten years old”, two cows and calves, one dressing table, one chest, two feather beds, two bedsteads, “also all the clothes and bed furniture she may make herself during the time she may stay and live with me.” Mary Ann apparently had helped Moses and his wife in the past, and the gifts are “in consideration of her service and affectionate nursing bestoised by her on me and my wife during several years past.” The document also specifies that Grace and the other property will remain under Mary Ann’s control, and not be subject to use by a future husband, or any other person. There is no further information about Grace or her relationships, and I’m assuming she will stay at Moses Johnson’s property along with Mary Ann. The document is dated April 14, 1848, eight years before it was presented in Court September 19, 1856 and registered September 26, 1856.
