Bill of Sale. Public Sale by Sheriff. The Ashe County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions ruled that Bartholomew Austin and William Austin owed George Bomer $117. The Court ordered the Ashe County Sheriff to seize “goods and chattels, lands and tenements” of the Austins, and sell them to satisfy the debt. Sheriff John C. Gambill “for John Ray Esquire Sheriff” sold “at public sale one Negro Girl by the name of Phebe and her child by the name of vitel” to Daniel Jones for $185. No further information about Phebe, vitel and their relationships. “vitel” starts with a lower case letter, which may be something besides “v”. The sale and document signing were November 27, 1824.Phebe, the enslaved girl, is later mentioned in Doc NC.ASH.C.309.1, as being sold from Zachariah Austin to Bartholomew Austin at a later date of April 6, 1826.
